Calling

Calling

Calling is a word we have thrown around a lot in our culture – especially as it relates to the Christian.

We look for a calling, a bigger purpose, that one task in life that makes it all worthwhile. What has God called you to? What is your ministry? Does your vocation have anything to do with your calling?

We could have an endless debate on what a calling actually is. Ephesians 4:1-2 tells us, ” As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” This calling is the foundation of all others, in my opinion.

The calling Paul is talking about in his letter to the Ephesians is a calling to be holy, set apart. A pretty big calling, if I do say so myself.

I believe many times we, including me, get caught up in what He has “called us” to do. We see a task or vocation as an answer to this call, and forget that ultimately He has called us to become more like himself – He has called us to follow Him.

We certainly have specific tasks along the way, one preparing us for the next, I believe. It is important that we step where He wants and stop when He commands, but ultimately our calling is about following Him.

This is our calling:

“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers” (Psalm 1:1-3).

Delighting in the law of the Lord and meditating on Him day and night, this is it. If we do this, we will yield fruit in season – when He is ready.

Sometimes we follow and feel there has to be more – more than dishes, more than an eight to five job, more than…

It is in the day-to-day tasks that we have to follow and those tasks yield fruit if we simply continue on the path He gave us. Our lives are not about some grand scheme or awesome plot – well, I guess they are, actually. Our grand scheme is to tell the world about Jesus – the world where we live, the place where He planted us.

God has assignments for us along the way. He has people He wants us to impact. He has stuff He wants us to do – sometimes big and sometimes small. But what He really wants is us – following Him. In that one step, we bring honor and glory to the One who saved us and hopefully draw others to Him.

Bringing Him glory:

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
    How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
“Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen” (Romans 11:33-36).

What could be more awesome a calling than that? To Him be the glory.

Big Enough – plus a giveaway!

Big Enough – plus a giveaway!

what happensMinistry. Calling. Mission.

All words we use in our Christian environment. All pointing to the same question – what does God want you to do and are you doing it?

This past year I have served in Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) as President of our installation. I have also stepped out more into something I have come to love – speaking/sharing at retreats, prayer breakfasts, meetings. Both roles have challenged me. Not in terms of could I do it or not, but in being a spiritual leader.

The logistics of these things do not bother me. I can write up talking points, organize boards, vision and plan for an organization. Those things are easy. The challenge? Am I saying and doing the things God would have me to? Am I Biblically sound in my teaching? Am I discerning enough to know when things are not as they should be spiritually in my organization and do I have enough courage to do something about it?

These are the questions.

I believe God has called me to these roles for this time, and hopefully allows me to continue to serve Him in leading others. I do love to tell people about Jesus. But insecurity haunts me, much like it does others at times. Am I doing well enough, am I discerning enough, what if I mess up somewhere? I have prayed over these things a lot lately. God has blessed me in walking through those questions.

He first asked me if I trust Him – and then He asked  if I thought he was big enough. Big enough for what? Big enough to guide me in the ways He would have me to go and big enough to override/fix/use any mistakes I make to further His kingdom. As much as I would like to avoid it, I will mess up – and not just once. Is He big enough?

I recently read an article about Christian leadership. Apparently in American society, we believe as a group of believers that there is a lack of Christian leadership. I would agree. As the article points out, we would consider it a “crisis of leadership.”

I do believe we have a crisis, but not because we don’t have the resources. In the survey for the article, the most important trait Christians looked for in a leader was integrity. Notice, they were not looking for perfection. Crazy though, only 15% of those surveyed actually considered integrity as one of their personal leadership traits.  Weird.

What I see in the survey and in Christians around me is the same thing I see in myself. I am a leader, even if it means just leading my children. By it is difficult to see myself this way. I know me. I know how often I mess up. I can recall and recite the mistakes I have made. I wonder many times why anyone would follow a pitiful sinner like me. Look, if we stay right here satan wins.

Being a leader in my home or outside it is not a matter of perfection it is a matter of faith. Who do I follow and is He big enough?

I believe He is. I believe that my God who breaths stars, walks on the same water He created, and lives inside of me is big enough. Big enough to forgive the mistakes I make and love me anyway. Big enough to show Jesus to those I meet even if I say the wrong thing. Big enough to save others even when the life I live in front of them is a constant picture of the need for grace. Big enough.

So today I leave the same challenge for you that He has laid on my heart. Are you doing the things He has called you to? Are you stepping out in faith to do things beyond what you are comfortable? Are you being the Christian leader He has called you to be in the place He has planted you? Do you believe He is big enough?

Today our giveaway is the last of the month. The winner will win Lysa Terkeurst’s book  What Happens When Women Say Yes to God plus a $10 Starbucks giftcard. How do you enter? Knowing His Voice

Knowing His Voice

know your bibleSo many voices in the world and only One that matters. But do we know the One?

The more I read Scripture the more I realize that the apostles and those of the early church knew a lot about the law and Scriptures they had. They could quote from so many different parts of Old Testament law and prophets that it is amazing. Now granted, some of the Pharisees and such added some things and completely missed the heart of Scripture (and therefore missed Jesus), but they knew their Scripture.

As I sit and read my few chapters a day and attempt to help my children memorize Scripture, I realize that I know parts and pieces of what is truly the greatest story ever told. I struggle to memorize and rarely dig as deep as I should when reading.

I need to seek Him more, be hungry for the Word, and desire to have a more intimate relationship with Him. I need to know His voice.

With so many voices in the world, it can be so easy to get distracted or detoured. Finding truth in the midst of lies becomes almost impossible and loving others because we see them as God does is all but hopeless.

We need to know the Voice. We need to become so intimate with the One who called us that we know any voice that is not His and we can hear Him in the craziness that is around us.

Many years ago my mother used to sit in the hallway outside our bedrooms at night and sing hymns to my sister, my brother and I as we fell asleep. Great memory, right?

As we got older though, we became involved in the youth group at our church. On Sunday mornings we would run a little late to worship service. Finding my parents in the middle of 600 or so other people was a little difficult to say the least. My siblings and I learned a trick. We would simply wait till they sang a hymn and then we would be able to pick my mother out in the crowd because of her voice.

God is just like that. If we spend time with Him and get to know His voice, we will be able to pick Him out in this crazy world as well and follow the One Voice that matters.

So to help us along, I would love to giveaway a little book called “Know Your Bible.” It is a great little resource to understand the foundation of each book of the Bible and hopefully challenge us to get into Scripture more, seeking to see God at work and know Him better.

How to you enter? Well, leave a comment sharing what resources you use to study your Bible or how you choose what to study. Easy as pie. Can’t wait to hear! Deadline to enter is Tuesday, April 23 at midnight.

Legacy

Legacy

outlive your lifeI have thought about and talked about legacy a lot these days. I think we all wonder how people will remember us. Did we love? Did we share? Did we help?

I think we also get overwhelmed sometimes and wonder how we can make a difference when there is so much need around us.

I pray about this frequently. How do I determine what to do? How do I make sure my heart and my focus is in the right place? Who am I following?

Legacy – I know a few people who have left an indelible impact on my life – not because they had multiple degrees or lots of money or any “special” gift, but because they had learned how to love and to follow.

My heart these days is to see what God is doing around me and how He wants me to be involved. He has made us all different but He has a place for all of us. It takes all of us doing what He called us to do to make the complete and beautiful picture of the painting God has designed. It is awesome when it all comes together.

In talks I have done recently, I have asked people to share one word that they would like people to use to define the legacy they leave and then to tie it to a Scripture that God has placed on their heart or one that has been a favorite that God has used for years.

So for this week’s giveaway I am asking that of you. What is the one word you would use to describe the legacy you would like to leave and what verse has God brought to you recently or through a lifetime that ties in? please share! I can’t wait to hear!

Mine? Adventure – John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I (Jesus) have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL.”

The prize? Max Lucado’s book “Outlive Your Life.”

Deadline to enter is Tuesday, April 16 at midnight. Can’t wait to see what legacy you plan to leave!

Winner of Giveaway – Military Wives New Testament

military wives new testamentAnd the winner is…Christine W.!! Yeah – check your inbox for information, Christine!

Make sure to tune in tomorrow for our next giveaway! It’s a month of giveaways and I am glad you are along for the ride! Do you think I put in enough exclamation points :) ?

Pick up the Trash (plus a Giveaway!)

Pick up the Trash (plus a Giveaway!)

military wives new testament Walking up to the Chapel on post yesterday, I passed right by a piece of trash. I figured I had my hands full, I do a lot for people anyway, the least someone else could do was pick up the trash on their way in. I kept walking…till I heard the whisper in my heart.

He said, “Kori, pick up the trash.” I informed God that I did not want to pick up the trash. I did not necessarily even want to be out of my house and interacting with people anyway, so picking up trash was a bit too far. I mean, I had shown up already, give me a break, right?

Well, not so much. The voice was there again. He said, “I did not ask if you wanted to pick up the trash, I just told you to do it.” Apparently, that was the reminder of the day.

Obedience is mandatory, but not always fun. We get excited many times to follow Jesus – this life can be a wonderful adventure we never anticipated, but sometimes following can be hard. God calls us to complete obedience. He does not ask us if we want to or let us choose when we will follow, He just says to follow. Obedience much like love is a choice – and our attitude in it is a choice as well.

God asks us to do many things. Some as small as picking up a piece of trash and some much bigger. Regardless of the size, He expects us to simply to what He says…and to do it joyfully. We never know what is going on around us and what effect we have on others. We never know what God is trying to teach us or prepare us for down the road. There is so much we don’t know – we just have to learn to trust.

Much like I do with my children, I ask them to do smaller things to make sure they are following directions and as they learn and grow they are asked to do more. God does the same with us, but I also believe sometimes He wants to pull us back to the basics. Yesterday was one of those days. He wanted to know if I was going to be obedient in all things – even picking up the trash. I was reminded in that moment yesterday that I need to be more attentive to His voice. I am pretty sure He has asked me to do some little things like that at other times and I just didn’t hear. Like maybe standing in line at the commissary and He wants me just to encourage and share Jesus with the lady checking me out. Or maybe He wanted me to actually acknowledge and encourage some random person I have met. There is no telling what I have missed and it is not about just picking up trash. It is about sharing Jesus.

trash

So today, I am determined to listen for His voice. In order to do that, though, I need to know His voice. I need to spend my time reading His Word and actually talking to Him (and listening). I get complacent and just read my verses, throw up a quick prayer and call it good. You can imagine how many friends I would have if I treated all of my relationships this way. A friend of mine the other day even pointed out that if we just spend one hour each day with Jesus, we have still only spent 4.2% of our time with Him. Wow, that doesn’t say much for me.

I am challenged and humbled…and prepared to do better. I want to hear His voice, and I want to follow. I want to share Jesus.

How about you? What kind of time do you spend with Jesus and how do you spend it (reading, praying, singing, etc)?

As an encouragement (and as a bonus because of my new website design!) I am giving away a Millitary Wives New Testament just published by Zondervan. Included in it are ninety days of devotionals written by military wives and stories from the homefront.

How do you enter? Either of two ways:

1. Simply comment below how you spend your quiet time with Jesus.

2. If you have a blog, you can answer this same question on your blog and link back to here. Please put the link to your blog post in the comments section below.

All entries must be in by midnight Tuesday, April 9. A winner will be chosen on Wednesday, April 10. Also look for another giveaway next week!

I Feel Like His Favorite

I Feel Like His Favorite

This has been my thought lately as I have read through the book of John.

John, being one of the Gospels, tells us the story of Jesus ministry on Earth. He was there on so many occasions from the first of Jesus ministry to standing at the foot of the cross. John loved Jesus.

It was John that Jesus spoke to when He said “Here is your mother” (John 19:27) as He hung on the cross. From that time on, the Scripture says that John took Mary into his home.  John was with Jesus – heart and soul – through Jesus entire earthly ministry, but he continued to believe and worship Jesus after His ascension into heaven. John loved Jesus.

Throughout the book, John also refers to himself as the “disciple whom Jesus loved.” This is the part that has stuck out to me lately. John loved Jesus, but he also knew that Jesus loved Him. Through all that time he spent with Jesus, he knew the love and care Jesus had for him and also knew that Jesus death on the cross was the ultimate display of love. As John stood at the foot of the cross, we can only imagine how he must have felt.

I know Jesus died for me, but standing there watching Jesus do so would have been much different than reading about it. To see the anguish and pain and at the same time see the love and hope – it was an amazing day for sure.

But John was different, remember he spoke of himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. Jesus did love John – more than He loved the other disciples? more than He loved me? No, not more than anybody else. But John understood something that I have yet to fully comprehend. As John watched Jesus earthly ministry and stood at the foot of the cross, he knew that Jesus would have done it all just for him. John had watched Jesus heal many both of physical problems and spiritual sin. He knew how tired Jesus would get from ministering to people, and yet loved them enough to keep going. He saw Jesus’ compassion and grace in the lives of many, but he knew the love that Jesus had for him and witnessed first-hand just how far that love would go.

John felt so loved by Jesus, that although he knew differently, he felt like Jesus favorite. Hanging out with Jesus will do that to you. Reading through history in our Scripture, we see a picture that God painted just for us. The story of redemption from the time of creation. He had a plan to save me all along – even if I was the only one – and has been orchestrating it since before time began. All for me.

As we look at the cross of Easter, and the grace and salvation that follows, we come to feel like Jesus’ favorite too. He did it all to save the world, but He would have done it even if it had been just for me. Today, I feel like His favorite too.
